The paper of record and the network that brought us both “Survivor” and the continued career of Jennifer Love Hewitt have joined forces to poll the American people – or at least 1,281 of them – what they’d like to see in the way of healthcare.

And while the American people aren’t always to be trusted in picking their American Idol, they are pretty clear about who should be paying for healthcare in this county: not them.

Here are the highlights:

U.S. HEALTH CARE SYSTEM NEEDS…

  • Fundamental changes: 54%
  • To be completely rebuilt: 36%
  • Minor changes: 8%

SHOULD GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR ALL?

  • Yes: 64%
  • No: 27%

WHICH IS MORE SERIOUS?

  • Providing health insurance for all: 65%
  • Keeping health care costs down: 31%

PARTY THAT WOULD IMPROVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

  • Democrats: 62%
  • Republicans: 19%
