Remember that friend in high school?  The one who saw you in those knee-frayed acid-washed pegged-jeans, and then totally tried to pass that look off as his the next day at school?  That friend is today’s Wells Fargo who, stealing a page out of the Bank of America style book, is thinking of offering credit cards to undocumented consumers, too.

Bank of America has already done most of the legwork on this.  It’s launched the fledgling program, and defended itself.  This could be the start of a new trend in mega-banks.

"We are exploring the possibility of offering unsecured credit cards to Wells Fargo checking account customers who do not have Social Security numbers," said Marge Rice, Wells Fargo vice president of regional banking communications, in a statement. "Wells Fargo recognizes a great need for equal access to financial products and services for all customers who want to build credit, establish financial security and achieve the American dream."
